How Much Room Do I Need for My Luxury Home Gym?
Less than most people assume. A serious strength and cardio setup fits in about 10 by 12 feet, and a wall-mounted cable machine needs under a quarter square meter of floor. What actually governs the room is not the equipment footprint — it is the clear space you leave around it.
Start with clearance, not equipment
Every piece of equipment needs two measurements: what it occupies, and what it needs around it to be used. The second is usually larger, and it is the one people forget when they measure a room and decide what fits.
Three planning rules cover most situations. Leave 36 inches of walkway anywhere you need to pass. Leave 6 to 7 feet of clear floor in front of any wall-mounted unit, because that is where the exercise happens. And leave enough room at the working end of a bench or rack to load and unload plates without turning sideways. If you are planning the whole room rather than fitting one piece into it, our guide to designing a luxury home gym covers budget, brands and sequencing alongside these numbers.
Footprints for the pieces people ask about
| Piece | Footprint | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NOHrD SlimBeam cable machine | 40 cm wide, 20 cm off the wall, 215 cm tall | Under 0.25 m² of floor, with a 75 kg stack |
| NOHrD Wall Bar | Projects 13 cm from the wall | 14 rungs plus a foldout top bar |
| NOHrD SquatRack | Folds flat to the wall | Holds 200 kg when extended |
| PENT BANKA bench | 51″ w × 19″ d × 22″ h | Four backrest angles, two seat positions |
| PENT COLMIA dumbbell stand | 63″ w × 14″ d × 23″ h | Holds ten pairs |
| PENT LOVA kettlebell stand | 36″ w × 16″ d × 17″ h | Seven kettlebells |
| PENT LESNA barbell rack | 20″ w × 20″ d × 69″ h | Vertical, so it takes almost no floor |
| NOHrD TriaTrainer bench | Under 1 m² | Folds into three positions |
What fits in a room this size
A corner of a bedroom or office — roughly 6 × 8 feet
One wall-mounted anchor and a mat. A Wall Bar at 13 cm of projection, or a SlimBeam on the wall, plus floor space to work in front of it. Add a VivaBall and a balance board and you have a complete bodyweight and cable program without the room reading as a gym.
A spare room — roughly 10 × 12 feet
This is the sweet spot. A cable machine on one wall, a bench, a dumbbell stand along the second wall, and still 36 inches of walkway through the middle. Or swap the dumbbells for a rower, which stands upright against a wall when you are not using it.
A dedicated gym — 14 × 16 feet and up
Now you can put a SquatRack and bench on one wall, cable on another, and a treadmill or rower on the third with room to walk between all of them. Beyond about 16 feet square, more space stops adding capability and starts adding echo.
The pieces that give the space back
Several pieces are designed to disappear. The SquatRack folds flat against the wall between sessions. The WaterRower M1 stands upright on guide wheels. The NOHrD StepTower hides eight dumbbells, resistance bands, cork blocks and a mat inside a single swiveling tower. If the room has another job during the week, build around these first — and see why a wall bar earns its place in a small room.
Three things to check before you order
- Wall structure. Wall-mounted pieces anchor into studs or masonry. Find out what is behind the drywall before you choose the wall.
- Ceiling height. Pull-ups on a wall bar and running on a treadmill deck both need headroom above your standing height.
- The route in. Doorways, stair turns and freight elevators decide what can reach the room. We can confirm crate dimensions before you order.

Common questions
What is the minimum room size for a home gym?
About 6 by 8 feet, if you build around one wall-mounted piece. That is enough for a cable machine or wall bar plus the clear floor you need in front of it.
How much clearance do I need around equipment?
Thirty-six inches for any walkway, and 6 to 7 feet of open floor in front of a wall-mounted unit.
Can a home gym share a room with something else?
Yes, and it is the most common way our clients do it. Build around pieces that fold or store upright — the SquatRack, the TriaTrainer, a rower on guide wheels.
